The space
Built in 1856, the I.B. Munson House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's namesake, Ibrahim Munson, was a prosperous farmer and merchant who built the house for his retirement so he could live in the center of town. He was particularly proud to have been one of the first in Wallingford to have indoor plumbing.
As you step inside the front entrance with its grand stairway you can imagine all the history that occurred here, from the wedding of Mr. Munson's granddaughter in her Victorian gown to saying farewell to the many Munson men who left this home to fight in the Civil War.
Although it retains the charm of its 19th Century origins, the I.B. Munson House has been equipped with all the latest conveniences including Sonos sound systems, Philips Hue mood lighting, large Fire TVs and gigabit internet. The newly renovated kitchen, with its six-burner gas stove, double oven, and all the kitchen gadgets you could want, is perfect for preparing a feast. And you can take your pick of eight fireplaces to warm your feet beside after a day of hiking or skiing. In the summer, there is central AC downstairs with portable units for each bedroom upstairs.
Guest access
You'll have the whole house and the carriage house to yourselves. In addition to the 7 bedrooms, 5 of which have their own ensuite bathrooms, there is also a chef's kitchen, parlor, drawing room, library, and office. Plus, the carriage house features a billiard table, Sonos sound system, TV, bar and gas fireplace, providing the perfect spot for some after-dinner entertainment.
Other things to note
The I.B. Munson House is situated right in the heart of Wallingford. There are fantastic restaurants in the area. For dinner, we especially like the Victorian Inn, with its Swiss/Austrian influenced menu and extensive wine list. We also love Sal's South, a great casual Italian restaurant is just two houses down. Right next to Sal's South is Sweet Birch Coffee Roasters and Bakery for fantastic coffee and baked goods in the morning. Mamma Tamara's is great for lunch or dinner. Their Philly cheesesteak should not be missed! Walk two houses north and you can get fresh homemade baked bread and bagels by Erika. The Main Street Cafe serves great breakfasts and lunches. If you plan to prepare your own meals you need to head to the Wallingford Locker, an excellent butcher with real cob-smoked bacon. All this within two blocks! And Rutland, with its innumerable dining and cultural offerings, as well as airport and Amtrak station, is only 10 minutes north.
If you're looking for a winter getaway, the I.B. Munson House is the perfect location. Just 20 minutes from Okemo/Jackson Gore and 35 minutes from Killington and Bromley, you can enjoy all the winter activities the area has to offer.
